Postdoctoral Fellow at Kyoto University's Institute for Fundamental Physics; Assistant Professor at Kobe University's Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology. Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo (1994), Professor (2008).
  • • Research focuses on complex systems and artificial life. Began research on 'Machine Human ALTA' in 2016.
  • • Awards: Excellence Award, Japan Media Arts Festival (2017); Ars Electronica Distinction Prize (2018); Wired Innovation Award (2025).
  • • Publications include 'Movement Creates Life: A Constructive Approach to Life and Consciousness' (2007), 'The Sandwich Theory of Life' (2012), and 'Between Human and Machine' (2016, co-authored).
