- • Born in Tokyo in 1952. Graduated from the Faculty of Science, Kyoto University; completed the doctoral coursework requirements at the Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University. Ph.D. in Science.
- • Held positions including Visiting Researcher at the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, Researcher at the Japan Monkey Centre, and Research Associate, then Associate Professor and Professor, at Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute and Graduate School of Science, later serving as Dean. Served as the 26th President of Kyoto University until 2020. Specializes in human evolutionary theory, with field research on wild Japanese macaques on Yakushima and wild gorillas across Africa.
- • Former President of the Primatological Society of Japan, the International Primatological Society, and the Science Council of Japan; former member of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation; served as Senior Advisor for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. Recipient of the Minakata Kumagusu Prize and the Academia Prize.
- • Author of numerous books, including "Everything Important in Life I Learned from Gorillas," "The Empathy Revolution," "Voices of the Forest, Eyes of the Gorilla," "A Way of Thinking About Aging," and "Thinking in the Gorilla Forest."
